With ever-tightening budgets, AEC firms are looking for creative ways identify potential business. One often-untapped resource, are social networking tools like Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook. Many AEC firms are in the experimental phase of social networking and many more haven't yet considered taking the plunge. Like any new industry tool, there is a lot to learn. Before you consider incorporating these tools as part of your strategy, there are a few basic things to think about first.

Faleafine Bred, born, and raised in Hawaii; L.P. "Neenz" Faleafine dedicated more than a decade of her professional career building communities as a Property Manager in neighborhoods on Oahu, Maui, the Big Island, and in Houston, Texas. Neenz focused on the intertwined relationship between the property owners, residents, and outlying neighborhood members to reinforce the goals of the entire community. Nearly three years ago, a casual conversation on Twitter led to her sitting in the audience at a conference listening to a speech by Founding Partner of Garage Technology Ventures, co-Founder of Nononina, author, and speaker Guy Kawasaki. A week later, Neenz was employed by Nononina as a Truemorist for citizen journalism site, Truemors and today is the Chief Evangelist for leading news aggregation site, Alltop. As part of the Nononina team, Neenz reports to and works directly with Kawasaki. Her experience as a Property Manager combined with her knowledge of social media networking, marketing, and innovation gained from Nononina inspired her to launch her media marketing company, Pono Media. As the Founder of Pono Media, Nennz aims to empower business owners and entrepreneurs to build communities and form partnerships using social media marketing.
Chang has more than 20 years' experience in marketing and public relations, including 11 years with Starr Seigle Communications, five years as the Marketing Director for Coldwell Banker Pacific Properties, and four years as the Marketing Director of Aloha Tower Marketplace. She is currently a freelance writer and independent marketing consultant, specializing in integrating the new social media with traditional media to maximize clients' marketing efforts. Clients and projects include Pearlridge Center, Metromix.com, the Honolulu Advertiser, Bank of Hawaii, RSVPStyle.com, Lanakila Paific Meals on Wheels, and Edible Hawaiian Islands Magazine. Melissa is accredited by the Public Relations Society of America and was named the 2006 Gregg W. Perry Public Relations Professional of the Year by the Hawaii Chapter. She was also named on of the "Top 20 Social Media Geeks in Honolulu" by Bytemarks and "Honolulu's Best Twitter" by Honolulu Weekly.

Act 82, SLH 2007 establishes a state building code which will eliminate the fragmented building requirements which currently exist between the counties in Hawaii. The state building code will include the latest edition of the International Building Code and counties are mandated to adopt that code. The 2006 IBC will soon become the state-wide instrument for regulating construction. This session is an overview of that code illustrating its effective use by concentrating on the essential sections of occupancy classification, construction types, allowable area and height, fire resistive construction and means of egress.

Bureau Veritas is a multi-service company with a network that covers 140 countries/600 offices. Hasenin is its Chief Operating Officer for Building Code Compliance and Public Works Services, Western Region, North America, and Vice-Chair of the California Building Standards Commission. He was formerly the Chief Building Official for both San Francisco and San Diego and has lectured extensively to professional organization including the American Institute of Architects, the International Code Council and the organization of California Building Officials on code related subjects. Hasennin has lectured for the International Code Council and was a member of the ICC Education Committee.

How to properly specify a successful installation of ceramic and stone tiles. The focus of the program will be the industry standards; TCA (Tile Council of America) and ANSI (American National Standard for Installation of Ceramic Tile) handbooks, changes in the TCA 2009, ANSI 2008 and the new 2009 ANSI A137.1 Standard for Ceramic Tile and beyond. The discussion will expand on industry standards, labors input and will include definitions.

Jim Whitfield FCSI, CCPR, CTC, LEED AP; is the Technical Director for MERKRETE brand of ceramic and stone tile installation materials. MERKRETE manufacturer's a complete line of thinsets, grouts, underlayments and specialize in waterproof, crack isolation and sound reduction membranes for the tile industry. MERKRETE has been manufacturing for over 30 years with plants 8 different locations in the US. Whitfield sits on many tile industry committees' including; Tile Council of America, National Tile Contractor's Association and is 3rd Vice President of Materials, Methods and Standards Association. He is also an Industry Director for the Pike's Peak Chapter of CSI.

Glenn Miller has been in the building products industry for over 24 years, all with Temple-Inland's sales and marketing department in a wide-range of capacities. Today, he is responsible for architectural marketing and technical support for the western half of the US and beyond. Miller has presented over 300 AIA-approved presentations and is a Passport Provider with the AIA. He is also a member of the US Green Building Council and the Construction Specifications Institute, holding both the CDT certification and LEED-AP certification.
