Equity by Design: Voices, Values, Vision
|Time & Location||8:00AM - 9:00AM, Room 321|
“Equity” and “equality” have been used interchangeably, but the terms are often confused with each other. While the focus of equality is framed with sameness being the end goal, equity may be defined as a state in which all people, regardless of their socioeconomic, racial, or ethnic grouping, have fair and just access to the resources and opportunities necessary to thrive. The mission of AIA SF's Equity by Design Committee is tripartite: to catalyze the goal of equitable practice for everyone, advance the profession and communicate the value of architecture. Through a data-driven process via the Equity in Architecture Survey and designing a framework for engagement, we seek to understand the pinch points of career progression and to promote the strategic execution of best practices in the recruitment, retention, and promotion of our profession's best talent at every level of practice.
This presentation will share the advocacy and outreach to date of Equity by Design and generate discussion about how we can locally become involved in promoting equity within our own community.
In her role as partner and process leader within WRNS Studio, Lilian Asperin, AIA, LEED AP BD+C utilizes her experience as a practice leader and licensed architect to develop synergistic relationships with leaders throughout the architectural and educational communities. Deeply involved with the local community, Lilian works to raise awareness and help break the cycle of poverty in the Bay Area through her work as a Tipping Point Community Partner. Lilian also is a board director of AIA San Francisco and is the co-chair of the Equity by Design Committee, a call to action for both women and men to realize the goal of equitable practice and communicate the value of design to society.
